There’s a new band on the scene here in Durham- Free Electric State. The band is comprised of David Koslowski, Shirle Hale, Stephen Mullaney and Nick Williams. I like to call it a supergroup actually. I am looking forward to hearing their stuff.

You might recognize David and Shirle from Gerty. Stephen is in The Wigg Report, and Nick used to be in The Hem of His Garment. They say they will be recording some new songs in March, and you will be able to see them perform live at Pick n’ Bitch on May 16th at The Pinhook.

Double CD Release Show with Sequoya and Scientific Superstar

Double CD Release Show with Sequoya and Scientific Superstar

First off, I would like to welcome Scientific Superstar to Subdivision 67. The Subdivision 67 group is very excited to have them on board. Scientific Superstar will be doing a double CD release with Sequoya at the Pinhook on December 6, 2008. Also performing that night is Sawteeth McTweedy and Lake & Hennepin.

A few words that the Independent Weekly had to say about Subdivision 67 artists performing at Troika this weekend.

Sequoya (8:45 PM at Duke Coffeehouse, Thursday)

This Durham two-piece leaves a big impression with rich vocals that weave in and out of slow acoustic arrangements. Listen for tunes from new record Sleep and Dream of Fire, out now on Subdivision 67. —EL

Sugar in the Dirt (8:45 PM at James Joyce, Thursday)

This Durham quartet splits its sound between melodramatic ambient and slow-spun dream pop, constructing its high/low clash with gliding strings and swollen beats. —KJ

The Virgo 9 (8:15 PM at Marvell Event Center, Saturday)

Primal garage-punk trio, where raw vocals drive vicious grunge discharges. —SG

The Wigg Report (11:55 p.m. at Bull McCabes, Friday)

Equal parts Beat Happening, Violent Femmes and Agent Orange, the Bull City trio throws eager sax and male-female vocal interplay into its jittery acoustic punk. Scrappy and fine. —BR

The Wigg Report is releasing a new triple album. It will contain different recording sessions. One session is entitled “Like Blammo Fast. Another is called, “The Suitcase Sessions,” and lastly, their live show from WXDU will be included.

They will have 30 preview copies out at Bull McCabe’s at the Troika after-party. So, Friday night around 11:30 PM come out to see their new material.

I’m a believer in supporting my friends in the music community, and I want to point out to everyone Chef Shirle’s site, Rockin’ the Stove. This site is chock full of kitchen tips, yummy recipes and food porn pictures. She is embarking on a new direction with her hubby, David K, and filming cooking segments. Check out her premiere episode, RTS-Episode 1 – Apple Crisp. Warning: this will make you want apple crisp right now.

The CD release party will take place on December 6th, 2008 at Pinhook.

Performing that night will be of course Sequoya and The Scientific Superstar, but also performing will be Sawteeth McTweedy and Lake & Hennepin.

Lake & Hennepin is Reese McHenry’s other band.  She says these are all the songs that don’t fit into the Dirty Little Heaters set.   It maybe the softer side of Reese, but her voice still packs a punch.  Yep. Yep.

So mark your calendar- December 6th at Pinhook.
