Attack of the Veldas Redux

The Saturday night show at BCHQ with The Virgo 9, Sequoya and Slow Gun Shogun was one of the best shows I have seen in a long time.  The Virgo 9’s acoustic set was smouldering with a passion and rawness that I have never witnessed before.  Teresa has skillfully harnessed her fiery passion, and she set the room ablaze with her powerful lyrics.   Truly I was in awe. 

Sequoya dominated the stage as well.  They have always been a very tight band and have has always  given a commanding performance.  This night was no different.   Bonnie’s voice has become stronger, and subsequently has taken on an even more arresting stage prescence.   Basically, she is giving it all and singing the hell out of these songs.   Her set kept the audience captivated until the end. 

Slowgun Shogun was sandwiched in between and did not disappoint.  A solo act with a very full sound.  On his left side, he was flanked by a kick drum rigged with a tambourine, and played a acoustic guitar run through an effects pedal.  He took “acoustic” to another level.

The Attack of the Veldas

Yep, that’s right! Performing on October 11th at BCHQ will be The Virgo 9 and Sequoya. They also will be playing with Chicago’s Slow Gun Shogun.

T of The Virgo 9 will be doing her alter-ego acoustic set with some very, very, very interesting ladies backing her up on vocals and drums. This is when The Veldas may attack, so don’t miss out.

If you don’t remember The Veldas, this is how Chaz described them back in the day- The Veldas are the new face to Durham’s attempt to save rock’n'roll. Geez, we’re getting to be quite the city, we’ve got something of an arsenal if I do say so myself. They play a supercharged, blown out rock that sometimes sounds like a distorted, fuzzed-out PJ Harvey crackling through the speakers. They’re an explosive duo who have made Joe & Jo’s downtown their home, stage and outlet. Melodies, haunting riffs and sadness creep across their lips and through their fingers. Not to be missed! Catch ‘em while they’re still raw and angry!

Oh, they are still angry, but the show on October 11th will be showing the softer side of T and Bonnie. Well…we will see.
